How the rule works

A short-stay Schengen visa lets you stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period, across all Schengen countries together. The 180 days roll: on every day of your stay, look back 180 days and count the days you were inside. The day you enter and the day you leave both count.

This counter does that check for every day of every trip. Bulgaria and Romania are now part of the Schengen area, so days there count. Cyprus and Ireland are not.

Your visa can also limit you to fewer days or one entry; check the sticker. This counter is a guide, not a border decision.

Questions people ask

Do the entry and exit days count?

Yes. Both count as days in the Schengen area.

Does the 180-day window reset?

No. It rolls: on each day, count the days you were inside during the 180 days up to and including that day.

What happens if I overstay?

An overstay is recorded and can lead to a fine, an entry ban and refusal of future visas.
